Integrated Colostrum Collection and Feeding
- General Details
This patent portfolio covers a closed-system receptacle designed for the collection, storage, and direct administration of colostrum and low-volume breast milk. The invention replaces conventional breast pump collection bottles with a self-standing, closed-end receptacle that maintains a closed pathway from milk expression through infant feeding. By supporting both mechanical pumping and manual hand expression within the same container, the device reduces the need to transfer milk between multiple collection and feeding vessels.
The technology addresses limitations associated with conventional colostrum collection methods. Existing breast pump systems and commercially available collection products often require multiple containers, adapters, syringes, spoons, or manual transfer techniques to recover and administer small volumes of milk. These additional handling steps can increase workflow complexity, require additional cleaning, and contribute to product loss during collection and transfer. The disclosed receptacle is designed to simplify this process while remaining compatible with existing breast pump systems.
Potential applications include both hospital and consumer settings. In neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), the receptacle may be used with compatible low-flow infant nipples as well as nasogastric (NG) and orogastric (OG) feeding tubes, supporting enteral feeding of premature and medically complex infants through a closed collection and delivery system. In the consumer market, the device is intended to integrate with established breast pump ecosystems and distribution channels, including Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers and insurance reimbursement pathways. The receptacle is designed for compatibility with several widely used breast pump platforms, including Medela Symphony, Ameda Platinum and Elite, Spectra, Lansinoh, and BabyBuddha.
